From Howard Hughes to Prince and now Chadwick Boseman, we hear about people who have access to millions of dollars and they still die without a will. Recently we learned of the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, a hero to many for his portrayal of the Black Panther in the Marvel comic’s movies. Now we have learned through a probate filing in California that he died without leaving a will. I don't know in particular why Mr. Boseman and other any of these other famous people don’t get around to doing their estate planning, but it probably says something about how we really hate to think about death. But the truth is we all go some time and we can't take it with us.
Many people think "I don't have very much, why do I need a will?" I'd argue that someone of modest means may need a will more than these famous people. Dying without a will massively increases the cost of closing out your affairs and passing on your things to the next generation. For the rich, after the cost of courts, attorneys and accountants, there will still be money left over. For someone with modest means, the costs of probate without a will can eat up a huge part of what is left when, for a fraction of the cost, they could have put an estate plan in place that minimized the costs after their death.
I've had so many clients who come in and can't get access to the few thousand dollars that their loved one left in the bank without going through probate and, without a will, that process will cost more than the money is worth. It is generally money that those left behind could really use. Failure to plan is planning to fail. So, I encourage you to take that step and meet with an attorney to create an estate plan. it will bring you peace and provide security for your loved ones when that day eventually comes.
